"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated fans have publicly coveted the role.

It's clear something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos frequently depict them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to make music."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics follow endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed confidence required a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global audience.

But the band will consistently be their number one priority.

"We have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
