French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in Channel following British demands

France has agreed to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the President asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.

French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.

French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both personnel and civilians.

"It is essential that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Now, a French naval police representative states officers will start intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.

Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible technique to snarl the propellers of the boats.

This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from office.

This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.

Now French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adapt to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.

The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
