India's capital Rises to Toxic Smog Post Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" category.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings
Multiple areas of Delhi registered an pollution measurement over 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended limit set by the WHO.
Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1800, representing fifteen to twenty times above healthy limits.
Fireworks Ban and Recent Changes
For the past four years, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that engulfs the capital as the cold season begins.
Nevertheless recently, the newly elected city administration petitioned the highest court to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".
Legal Decision and Reality
Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, the court complied with the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.
On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city recorded air quality spiking around the night hours to some of the worst measurements recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Regional Consequences
Extensive ignition of fireworks during Diwali also initiated a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the events.
Chronic Environmental Problem
The dangerously high readings of pollution in the city have continued as a serious problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Near Diwali, the amount of dangerous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the most severe levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated city.
Diverse Contamination Factors
The situation in the capital is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, construction debris, building projects, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, rural residents illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, producing hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.
Medical and Financial Impact
Public health and economic toll on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants living in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous research.
These hazardous conditions causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
The pollution is estimated to be causing approximately 10k early fatalities per year in the city.
