PSG Overcomes Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the season-opening cup on 14 separate times.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the French league champions and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to seize a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital leveler in the final moments to force the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
