The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever
The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
