Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
